PlayStation 3 not game? Nintendo’s Wii is outselling it two to one

From Trans-Pacific Radio and other sources:

It turns out that PlayStation 3, the product that was supposed to ’save’ Sony, is not quite cutting it in terms of sales. In fact, within Japan, the PlayStation 3 is being outsold by Nintendo’s Wii console by a factor or two to one. To add insult to injury, Sony seems to have come nowhere near its stated goal of shipping one million units within Japan by the end of 2006.

Is this a crisis for Sony? As anyone who lives in Japan can tell you, marketing for the PS3 has been unquestioningly bad. Nintendo had a jump with catchier, brighter ads from day one. Sony, on the other hand, chose some dark themes for their television promotions. Wii walked away with the ‘family market’ and has run with it straight to the cash register.

But, let’s not forget that the PS3 is built to last. There are not so many games yet available, and while Nintendo cashes in on the family-oriented games and the novelty of its new controller, titles are being developed for the PS3. Titles with high definition graphics. Titles that the serious gamers will want.

So - yes, the PS3 is down. But I’m not counting it out yet.
