January 2007 domestic new car, bus and truck sales: down again
February 1, 2007
By Ken Worsley
Last month we reported that new automobile sales in Japan had dropped for the 18th straight month to a 29 year low. Make that 19 months in a row; today the Japan Automobile Dealers Association released it’s January sales statistics, and sales of new cars, trucks and buses (excluding mini vehicles) has dropped yet again.
Sales of cars fell 10.1% against figures from January 2006, buses fell 4.5% and sales of trucks declined 11.2%.
When the statistics were broken down by individual car makers, 11 out of 12 manufacturers saw a decline in car sales against January of last year. Only Lexus saw an increase in sales, by 216.5 percent to 4,123 units. Toyota (8%), Nissan (22.6%), Honda (1.6%) and Mitsubishi (35.7%) all saw a decline in sales.
Sales of mini vehicles rose again, for the thirteenth straight month, by 2.4% to 138,269 units.
Yet again, the Japan Automotive Dealers Association has said that new car sales continue to drop because households are increasing their spending on mobile phone usage, which they claim accounts for the bulk of fixed household expenditures.
