Mobile phone subscribers in Japan pass the 100 million mark; DoCoMo’s 4G speed

Despite market leader NTT DoCoMo’s recent posting of a 2.4% drop in operating profits for 2006, there is certainly no decline in the number of people using mobile phones in Japan.
On December 31st, the number of mobile phone subscribers in Japan stood at 99.83 million. By the end of January, that figure had risen 0.4% to 100.22 million, to top the 100 million subscriber mark for the first time.
Although it seems inevitable that rivals AU and Softbank will gradually close the vast market share gap between themselves and DoCoMo, don’t count out the giants just yet. DoCoMo is positioning itself to lead the charge into a global standard for 4G handset and tranmission technology, and just a few hours ago DoCoMo released a press statement declaring that they had achieved the world’s first packet transmission at 5 gigabytes per second.

Got something to say?

When can we get a 4G iPhone in Japan?
Who know? I’m sure it will be some time yet. It’s still up in the air as to whether or not the iPhone will be 2G or 3G when released in Japan, though I’m betting on Apple putting out a 3G version, or else I just don’t see it selling.
