When bidets go bad: Japanese toilets catching fire!

Personally, I’ve never much liked the ‘Washlet,’ as the toilet/bidet hybrid is called in Japan. I had one experience where I tried to take one apart to figure out how it worked and ended up getting soaked in the process.

Now we find out that Toto, Japan’s largest toilet manufacturer, has seen 26 of its units go up in smoke, and three actually catch fire. Somehow, no one was injured.

I saw this on the evening news tonight, and it was hard for the announcers to keep straight faces, though they managed. Imagine if someone had been hurt! According to Toto spokesperson Emi Tanaka:

Fortunately, nobody was using the toilets when the fire broke out and there were no injuries. The fire would have been just under your buttocks.

Hot damn.
