NTT DoComo’s flat-rate communication plan tops the 10 million subscriber mark

About a week ago we reported that NTT DoCoMo had reported 25% losses in profit for fiscal 2006. It had been some time since good news was heard from the DoCoMo campe, but it looks like we finally have some: NTT DoCoMo’s Flat-Rate Data Communication Billing Plan Subscribers Top 10 Million.

One major problem with data-intensive 3G packets is that customers worry about how much they will cost to use, and thus remain reluctant to use them. DoCoMo says that its flat rate plan removes this anxiety: “The plan has attracted great popularity by freeing users from concerns about data charges when enjoying data-intensive services.”

10 million subscribers is nothing to sneeze at. Will we see AU and Softbank follow suit? One thing DoCoMo does not mention is whether or not the system is profitable or whether it is a loss-leader.

This absolutely looks like the way of the future. They just have to get the bandwidth cheap enough (are they buying it from themselves?) Getting the market share here would seem better than anything else, in my opinion. It’s true, the number one reason I don’t use the internet on my 3G phone is I don’t know how much it’s going to cost me at the end of the month.

This includes all web surfing, even watching videos?

Got something to say?
