Japan’s April Supermarket Sales: Down 1.0% for 16th Consecutive Month

The Japan Chain Store Association has released yet another report showing a decline in monthly sales at the nation’s supermarkets. In April, sales fell on a year-on-year basis at Japan’s supermarkets by 1.0 percent, marking the 16th consecutive month of decline.
Sales have dropped in 27 of the past 38 months. In March, sales at Japan’s supermarkets were down 1.5 percent.
The data covers 83 companies operating 8,800 supermarkets nationwide. When sales figures from shops operating for less than a year are included, revenues rose 1.5 percent.
Sales at supermarkets continue to fall despite March having been the third consecutive month with an increase in household spending.
Broken down by category, March 2007 supermarket sales looked like this:
- Food: -0.4%, 59.9% of total revenue
- Household Products: -1.4%, 21.0% of total revenue
- Clothing: -3.6%, 12.6% of total revenue
- Miscellaneous Items: -0.2%, 6.1% of total revenue
- Services: +0.4%, 0.3% of total revenue
