Cucumber Pepsi?

Pepsi Ice CucumberPepsi Ice Cucumber hit the shelves in Japan on Wednesday, and though I haven’t yet tried it (and don’t plan to), I watched Albrecht Stahmer from BizCast Japan drink a bottle of it as we recorded the most recent edition of our show that day.

What’s with this strange flavor? Aya Takemoto, spokesperson for Suntory (Pepsi’s distributor in Japan) told the press, “We wanted a flavor that makes people think of keeping cool in the summer heat. We thought cucumber was just perfect.”

Pepsi Ice Cucumber will only be on sale for the duration of the summer and only in Japan. Suntory hopes to ship 300,000 cases of the beverage over the next three months.

Seasonal beverages like this are not unusual in Japan, where soft drink makers are faced with distributors and retailers who constantly push for new products to feature in sales campaigns. This product, however, seems to have a uniqueness level not yet seen; a purple cow quirkiness that just may work.

Smells like melon, tastes kind of like nothing.

Not seen it in the shops, but I saw a discarded bottle outside the office.

What I want to know is why everyone is blogging about it!

Interesting marketing, or just plain old link bait.
