Japan supermarket sales fall 6.6% in March

According to data released earlier today by the Japan Chain Stores Association, supermarket sales in Japan fell 6.6% to 976.18 billion yen in March. Supermarket sales have now fallen for 16 consecutive months.
Here is a breakdown of March’s adjusted same-store figures (not including stores opened within the past twelve months):
- Food: -6.2%, 62.9% of total revenue
- Household Products: -7.4%, 19.8% of total revenue
- Clothing: -8.7%, 10.5% of total revenue
- Miscellaneous Items: -4.1%, 6.3% of total revenue
- Services: -4.8%, 0.4% of total revenue
All five major categories (and all 13 sub-categories) saw a decline in sales in March.
The Japan Chain Store association also released figures for fiscal 2009 as a whole. As expected, supermarket sales fell for the entire year, showing a 4.4% decline in FY2009. For the full year, supermarket sales were at 12.69 billion yen and fell below the 13 billion yen mark for the first time in 21 years.
