Read JEN’s Ken Worsley in Central Banking Quarterly
May 22, 2008
By Ken Worsley
A quick announcement: Japan Economy News editor Ken Worsley’s most recent article has been published in the May edition of Central Banking Quarterly, a publication of Incisive Media in London.
The article deals with the fiasco surrounding the recent appointment of a new Bank of Japan Governor, and details how the shifting political scene in Japan has affected and will continue to affect the nexus where government and finance intersect. Although it may seem simple to consider the fight over the appointment of a new BOJ Governor to be a mere proxy war between the ruling and opposition camps, much more is brewing behind the scenes in Nagatacho and the ideal that the BOJ is independent of the government continues to be undercut.

The BizCast Japan “Top 7 business stories of 2007″ has been released on Trans-Pacific Radio. Actually, it was released about a week ago, but we neglected to promote it here. In the program, Albrecht Stahmer and I discuss some of the biggest issues and trends that we saw in Japan in 2007, and speculate on how they might play out in the future. Have a listen over at Trans-Pacific Radio.
Japan Economic Reports Page
November 27, 2007
By Ken Worsley
We’ve finally added it to the menu above - the page listing Japan’s economic reports, websites where they can be found, and links to commentary on the reports here at Japan Economy News. The list isn’t quite completed - I still have to get the automotive and some of the retail reports in there, but once the categories are re-organized, it will all be up there soon. For now, they’re arranged alphabetically, but I’m open to suggestions on other ways to organize them…
Two links added to our blogroll
November 26, 2007
By Ken Worsley
Actually, I should have added these two links a long time ago, but I’m just getting around to the housecleaning I need to do. For those who follow Japan’s economy, Japan Economy Watch is an excellent source of commentary that posts a good amount of helpful charts. It’s a group blog with three contributors, so there is some collaboration going on.
One of those contributors is Claus Vistesen, who writes his own blog called Alpha-Sources-CV. Claus’ blog does not focus solely on Japan, so there is a wider viewpoint of the global economy being commented on here.
BizCast Japan #9 Released at Trans-Pacific Radio
November 19, 2007
By Ken Worsley
BizCast Japan #9 has been released over at Trans-Pacific Radio. Albrecht Stahmer and I sat down to discuss what’s going on in Japan’s business scene, and we think this is by far our most comprehensive discussion yet. Topics covered include the migration of Japanese brands overseas (Muji, Uniqlo), Toto’s marketing push in the US, misleading mobile phone advertising, the decline in construction of new houses and condos, Sony Financial’s IPO, what the effects of fingerprinting all foreigners might have on Japan’s international business hub aspirations, and…
…the last 20 minutes are a discussion of Japan’s English language teaching market and some thoughts on how it got into the current mess and why there seems to be no way out.
We would be flattered if you’d give us a listen.
